The Picket Fence Is A Timeless Classic
When it comes to fencing your property, particularly if you have a property with a large lawn, there is often no better choice than the old-fashioned traditional picket fence. Even though this type of fence is not particularly good for security, there is something about the design that adds a real feeling of solidity, maybe because the picket fence design has such a long history. This article will take a look at two types of picket fence, namely the classic wooden picket fence and the more modern aluminum picket fence, and discuss some of the advantages of various picket fencing styles.
Traditional suburban styles
The wooden picket fence is the real traditional classic, and is the one that most people associate with the suburban lawn and a large house at the end of the driveway. It does have the advantage that it is a natural material, and a wooden picket fence really does fit in well with the natural environment. It can be painted any color you like, though the white picket fence is such a normal part of the suburban landscape that many people will not think of painting it any other color, even though, blue, red, and even vibrant colors such as pink have also been used.

The thing you need to think about when choosing wood as the material for your picket fence is that this can be a high maintenance option, especially if you have a picket fence gate, since this will tend to suffer from a certain amount of wear and tear. Low maintenance options Aluminum fencing has often been sold off as the cheap alternative to wood, and although there is some truth in this, aluminum picket fencing can now look as good as a real wooden picket fence, and also help to cut down on maintenance. Many people think metal fencing only has to be a metal mesh fence, and that is why they have been turned away from aluminum as a metal for the picket fence. However a modern aluminum picket fence also has great designs and can really add an element of style to your property. This is especially true when it comes to the ornate styles that are now prevalent, and which can be bought from many garden centers. The main improvement has been that the slats now can look almost like wood due to the addition of the style effects on many metal fencing materials. Aluminum also has the added advantage that it is extremely strong, and is also extremely durable. You do not need to paint it more than once every few years, which is very different to a wooden fence which may need to be painted every year in order to stop it from rotting. Classic style fencing A classic style to consider is a Greenes picket fence in 18" x 3' wooden panels in white. Another is the pack from Genova which includes notched routed rails, ribbed rails and fence boards along with picket board tops. Each pack makes an 8 ft long x 4 foot high section. There is also the Husker stepped picket style in pebblestone. This is a vinyl picket fence, giving 6' high x 8' wide sections. It also includes a vinyl double 4' gate You should also take a look at some of the various enamel finishes, since these will also add to the durability. Overall the choice is between a wooden picket fence which has a very natural look, or an aluminum picket fence which may look less natural but which will also add much more durability. Once you have made this main decision the choice should be fairly easy as to which one is the best for your particular situation. You should also think about the style in terms of whether you want a two-barred or three barred picket fence, since this will change the whole look of the fence and how it interacts with the landscape. |
